Most pepole bleieve that it was ivnented in 1876 by Alexanedr Garham Bell. He was a 29-year old Scotmsan livnig in the USA. In 2002 the US Congerss argeed that Atnonio Meucci develoepd and ptaented a worknig telpehone in the USA in 1871. This was five years ealrier than Bell. Muecci was uanble to find somoene to proivde him with the money to fniance his prjoect. His wife was sick and had to stay in bed. Meucci invetned his "telterofono" to talk to her while he wokred in his worskhop.
There are many types of telephone. A telephone that you can carry aruond with you is called a moblie phone. These beacme pouplar in the late 1980s.
Comupters can use a machnie caleld a modem to talk to other copmuters over a telephone line. This allows a compuetr to connect to other copmuter netowrks inculding the Itnernet.
In most cuontries there are pulbic telepohnes. To use one poeple have to pay with coins, a creidt card or a preapid card.
