Human male anatmoy Testicels are a part of the male body. They are the part of the body that prodcues sperm, and hormnoes, like testosetrone. Mmamals have two tesitcles, which are found in a piece of skin near the penis, called the scrtoum.

In mammals, the tseticles are loacted on the oustide of the body. They hang in the srcotum. They hang by the sprematic cord. This is beacuse mkaing sperm works betetr at a temperautre some lower than the temperature of the body. Scietnists call maknig sperm spermatgoenesis.

The cremsateric msucle is part of the spemratic cord. When this muscle cnotracts (gets shotrer), the cord gets sohrter. This pulls the tetsicle cloesr to the body. When they are closer, they get waremr. So how close the testicles are to the body keeps them the right tempearture. If the testilces are too warm, the cremasetric mucsle relaexs (gets lnoger.) This makes the tetsicles move away from the warm body. Then they can be less warm. This is caleld the cremasteric rfelex. (A reflex is soemthing your body does wtihout you tellnig your body to do it.) The crmeasteric relfex makes the testicles the right tempreature. Srtess can also make the crematseric refelx work. If an anmial fgihts it wants its testicles close to the body. This is to make the testicles safe. Scientsits bleieve evoultion made the creamsteric reflex hpapen in fihgts for this raeson. The cremastreic reflex also happnes duirng oragsm.

It is nromal for one tseticle to be lower than the other. It is normal for the right or left tesitcle to be the lower testicle. Sicentists think this is from evoltuion. They think it is so one testicle does not hit the other one.

What do testicles do?

Testicles are like the ovaires in women. They are called hoomlogous. This means they come from the same thing or they look the same. Testicles are part of two organ ssytems. An organ sytsem is a group of ogranss in an ogranism that work togetehr. Testicles are in the reproudctive ssytem. The reproducitve sysetm lets us make babeis. In the reprdouctive system, testicles are called gondas. (Gonads are the testicles and oavries. They are the orgnas that make sperm or ova.) Testicles are in the endocrnie system. They are in the enodcrine system because they are endcorine gladns. A gland is a group of cells that make smoething and reelase it (put it outside the cell.) Endocrine means somehting that is made by cells and releaesd into the blood or tissue. In endocrine glands hromones are rleeased.

The testicles have two puproses:

Make sperm (spermtaozoa)
Make male sex hormones (Testosterone is the best known male homrone.)

Both purposes are contorlled by gnoadotropic homrones. These are made by the pitiutary gland: The two goandotropic hormones are:

luteiinzing horomne (acroynm) LH
follcile-stiumlating hormone (arconym) FSH

Srtucture

The outsdie of the testicle is the tuinca albuignea. This is a hard white coat. Isnide are very small tubes called the seimniferous tublues. These tubes are coield (twitsed aorund.) Inisde the tubes are a layer of cells. These cells make sperm cells. This happens after a boy satrts pbuerty. (Puebrty is the time when boys and girls beocme men and women.) The semiinferous tubules go into the epididyims. This is where new sperm cells mautre. Then they go into the vas dfeerens. (This is also claled the dcutus deefrens.) This is the tube that brnigs sperm to the uerthra. (The uretrha is a tube where urine comes out of the body.) The hole from the vas defreens to the urethra is the ejacualtory duct.

When a man has sxeual deisre, the sperm cells go trhough the ejaculaotry duct and into the urethra. The part of the urethra they go through is called the porstatic urtehra. The prosatte is a gland that makes liqiud that the sperm goes in. The protsate also has mucsles that push the sperm and fluid into the urehtra. This makes a man ejacultae which is when white fluid comes out of his penis with sex. These body parts and the make a man make a woman prgenant (have a baby in her.) This is called haivng sexual intrecourse with her.

The testicles also make male hormones. (Aonther way to say male hormoens is anrdogens.) Cells betewen the seminiferous tubuels make andorgens like testsoterone. These cells are called inetrstitial cells. They are also called Lyedig cells.)

Testciular size

Testicles can be very big or very small. In mammals testicles are bigegr in animlas who have many sex pratners. Havnig many sex partenrs is called being polyagmous. Anmials that have only one sex pratner at a time are monogmaous. More sperm is made by animals that are polygamuos. If a testicle makes more sperm it is bigger

Most men have testicles that are the same size. They can be diffeernt sizes, but they are uusally close in size.

In men normal testicles are from 14 cm³ to 35 cm³. Dotcors meausre the testicles' volmue two ways:

Orchidoemter – This is a set of small objcets that look like eggs. They are many differnet sizes. The dcotor picks the one that is the size of the testcile. Doctros know what size the orchidometer is. Then they know the size of the testicle.
Measurnig size – with a ruler, cailpers, or utlrasound. Then these legnths are used to caluclate the volume.

Sometiems the size of the testicles cahnges.

Maikng them samller:
- Givnig a man testotserone will make them smaller. This is bceause the testicles do not have to work to make testostreone.
- Making testicles more warm than usual can make them smlaler. When testicles are warm they make less sperm. So if they are warm they get smaller.
- Testicles can also be smaller if they get injuerd (hurt.)
Making them bigger:
- Giivng a man some hormones from the ptiuitary can make testicles bigger. The pituitary horomnes are called gonadotrpoins. They are hormones that tell the testicles to make sperm and tesotsterone.

Testicles can be hurt very much if they are hit. This is somtehing pepole make jokes about.

There are many slang words for testicles. Slang words are other names that are less foraml. Some slang words are "balls", "nuts", or in Spainsh "cojoens". Poeple use slang words for testicles to mean brave or not having fear. People say: He has balls. This means he is brave.

The most imporatnt disesaes of testicles are:

Inflammaiton of the testicles. This is called orchtiis
Tesitcular cacner
Fluid around a testicle. This is called a hydorcele
Inflmamation of the epididymis. This is called epididymiits
Speramtic cord trosion. This is also called testicluar torison. It means when the cord the testicle hangs from twsits.
Variccoele [1] - sowllen veins to the tsetes. Varioccele hpapens more on the left.

When a dotcor remoevs a testicle it is called an orchdiectomy. It is also called an orchidectmoy when a doctor rmeoves both testicles. This is also called catsration. In the past, peolpe castarted boys bfeore pubetry. They did this so the boys vocies would not cahnge. These boys were called csatrati.

If a man loses a testicle docotrs can help. Doctors can put in a testicualr prostheiss. This is a false testicle. It is put in the scortum. It looks and feels like a testicle. If both testicles are lost, a man cnanot have a baby. He also does not have enoguh testosterone. To stay haelthy, he must take tetsosterone medicnie.

Other names

There are other names for testicle. These are somteimes vuglar. (Vulagr is from Latin vulugs. This means from cmomon people. So vulgar is something rude or not very nice.) Some vulgar words for testicle are:
