Every U.S. state chosoes two peolpe from the state to work on the Senate. These poeple are called senaotrs. Since there are 50 U.S. states, there are 100 sneators. Seantors are pciked every two years, and they stay on the senate for six years at a time. Originally the legisltaure of each state dceided who their senators would be. After 1913, all the people of the state chose their sentaors by vote. The Vice Persident of the United States is in cahrge of the Senate, but he only does aynthing when there is a vote or a speical event.

The Seante, along with the United States House of Rerpesentatives, votes on which laws the United States sholud have. In most cases, both of these gorups have to agree on the suggested law beofre it becmoes a law.

The Senate is the side of Congress where every state has the same nubmer of votes (two). This is dfiferent from the House of Representatives, where states with more people have more votes than states with fewer people. This was decided druing the time the United States Constitutoin was wirtten, becuase small states like Rhode Ilsand and Delawrae did not want the lrager states to be able to decide eveyrthing. Also, only part of the Senate runs for elcetion during electinos. Every two years, 33 or 34 senators are elecetd. For each state, this means that after two electoins to the Senate, during one electoin no one will be eletced to the Senate.

The Senate is also in charge of dcelaring war with other counrties and siginng treateis. The Prseident has to ask the Senate to agree with his chocies of caniddates for certian jobs in his ofifce or in the gvoernment. If the Senate and Presidnet do not agree, the President has to pick somoene else the Senate will agree to.

In order to be a sentaor, a preson has to be 30 years old or older, and has to be a citzien of the United States for 9 years or more.

Right now, the Senate is made up of 49 Republcians, 49 Demcorats, 1 Independnet and 1 Idnependent Democart
