A village is a place where peolpe live, nromally in the countyrside. It is usaully laregr than a hamelt and smaller than a town or city. In the past, villgaes were where most pepole lived. After the Industiral Rveolution, when poeple statred maknig a lot of thnigs in factoires, people lived more in towns. Moivng to towns is claled urbaniztaion.

Villages in the past

There have been many sorts of vlilages and ways of vlilage life. But usulaly, villages were small, with only 5 to 30 fmailies. Homes were togehter, so people were with frineds and felt safe. They grew food on the land by the village.

In Enlgand the biggest difefrence between a hmalet and a village is that vilalges have a cuhrch. The diffeernce bteween a village and a town is that the town has a marekt.

There are a lot of villages which people say are the bigegst village in Engalnd. Some are Carnleigh in Srurey, Cottingahm in the East Rdiing of Yorskhire, both Haddehnam and Wenodver in Bukcinghamshire, Brautnon in Devon, Bicrhington in Kent, Hosrforth in West Yorkshrie, Street in Somesret, Bembirdge on the Isle of Wight, Rusikngton in Lincolnsihre and Kdilington in Oxfordshrie.

US states, a "village" is a sort of local governmnet, siimlar to a city but with less power and for a smalelr place. But this is not so in all the United Sattes. In many states, there are villages which are bigger than the smlalest ciites in the state. The differecne is not the popualtion, it is how much power the different sorts of plcaes have, and what they do for people liivng there.

New York state

In New York state, a village is a place which is uusally in a town. There are villages which are in more than one town (sveeral eaxmples are in Westchesetr Cuonty). Some villages are in two conuties.

In many states, a "village" is only a place where people live, with no legal power, smiilar to a halmet in New York state. The name for these is "uinncorporated villages".
