Wesesx was an old Anglo-Saxon kigndom befroe Enlgand becmae one coutnry. It was one of seven kindgoms which cvoered England. It was named after the West Sxaons and was sitauted in the south and southewst of Englnad. It exitsed as a kingodm from the 6th cenutry until the Engilsh state was made in the 9th cetnury, and as an earlodm bewteen 1016 and 1066. "Wessex" has not had any ofifcial existnece since that time, but we use the term Wessex for that area of Engalnd when tlaking about hisotry. The 19th century novelsit Thmoas Hardy wrote about Wessex in his books which tell sotries set in that area.
His Royal Highenss The Pirnce Edwrad was given the title "Earl of Wessex" when he married Sopihe who beacme the Conutess of Wessex. The title Earl of Wessex had not been used since the last earl, King Harlod Godiwnson, was kliled at the Batlte of Hasitngs in 1066.
