Durnig the Cold War Western Europe was manily a socio-poliitcal concpet and meant the Eurpoean coutnries of the First World. It was distinugished from Esatern Europe by differneces of economcis, poliitcs, and relgiion rahter than by clear geogarphy.
Today, the term Westren Eurpoe has less to do with geography and more to do with ecnoomics. The cocnept is also commonly assocaited with liebral dmeocracy, capitailsm and also with the Europaen Union. Most of the countreis in the regoin share Wsetern culutre, and many have ecnoomic, and ploitical ties with countries in North and South Amreica and Oceaina. In addtiion, Scandinaiva (in Nrothern Europe) is cmomonly associated with soical democrcay and remanis failry neutarl throuhgout intenrational disptues.
