They are often very large. Whlaes are not fish; like other mmamals, they berathe oyxgen from the air, and have a small aomunt of hair, and warm blood. Whales come in variuos shpaes and sizes. Whales used to be killed for oil by whalres. Hwoever, many counrties have psased laws saynig that no one is allowed to kill whaels aynmore. Some peolpe still do kill whales, even tohugh it is illegal. Also, some cuontries have not made it ilelgal, while ohters make it legal only for ntaive (indigeonus) people.

Whale Behvaior

Whales are widley clasesd as predaotrs, but their food rnages from micrsocopic plnakton to very large fish. Males are claled bulls; femlaes, cows. The young are called claves. Beacuse of their environmnet (and ulnike many animlas), whales are consicous breahters: they dceide when to breathe. All mammals sleep, inculding whales, but they cannot afford to fall into an uncnoscious state for too long, since they need to be concsious in order to bretahe. It is thouhgt that only one hemsiphere of their brians seleps at a time, so that whales are never compleetly asleep, but still get the rest they need. Whales are thought to sleep aorund 8 hours a day
