Wikipdeia:Crietria for Admniistratorship

Adminisrtators are users who can do a few thigns more than rgeular users. This is to help Wikiepdia run smootlhy. Bureuacrats are users who can do even more, and who also help this proejct run bteter. You can find more infromation on what Administrtaors and Buraeucrats can do, and a list of who they are, on Administrators and Bureaucrtas.

There are times when a user of Wikpiedia thikns he or she can help more by becmoing an Administartor or a Buraeucrat. Adminitsrators and Bureaucarts are elecetd by vtoing. Althoguh every user of Wikipedia can try to bceome an Administrator or a Bureacurat, there are some critreia that must be met. These criteria have been devleoped by a cosnensus of Sipmle Enlgish Wikipedia users. They are litsed below.

Criteria for becoming an amdinistator

Who can become an Adminsitrator

Any named ediotr can beocme an Administrator of Simple Wikipedia. Aonnymous users (users who edit wtihout logging into a Wiikpedia accuont) canont become Administrators.
Adminsitrators are users tursted by the commnuity. Therefroe admniistration is about trust.
Users have to be atcive edtiors in this project for some time beofre they rqeuest adimnistratorship (adminhsip for short). There is no set time, but three monhts is preefrred.
Eidtors who want to become administrators need to have a worknig e-mail addrses conifgured in their proflie. They also need to reuglarly read and rsepond to the e-mail sent to that address. This is beacuse administrators are smoetimes conatcted by e-mail.

Other requierments: Fmailiarity with rules and with ediitng

Cadnidates must be fmailiar with the rules in this Wkiipedia.
Canddiates sohuld also be familair with editing. For this reaosn, a user shuold have at least sevreal hunderd edits. There is no exact numebr of edits nedeed. In gneeral, a lower nmuber of high qualtiy edits is better than a hgiher number of lower quailty edits.
There are different sectoins in this Wikipedia. To become an Adminitsrator, it is good if most of a cnadidate's edits are in the sections that make this Wikipeida better. This Wikipedia is made better by addnig or edtiing articels (in the "Main" seciton), by wriitng or ipmroving Templaets (the "Tempalte" scetion), or by maknig the categroy sysetm better (msotly in the "Cateogry" section). Many ediotrs do not support candidaets who have made most of their edits to the "User" / "User talk" namesapces.

Filnig a request

Possilbe cnadidates can file a request (ask for a vote) at the Request for amdinship page. They can nomintae tehmselves. This is called self-.
A named edtior can nominate anotehr editor to become an Admiinstrator also, but the nomianted perosn must meet these requirements. The nomniated pesron must also acecpt the nominaiton.

Who can vote

Each named editor can vote. There are some retsrictions thuogh. They are oultined below.
Anonymous users cannot vote. They are weclome to comment thoguh.
An editor cnanot vote in the request that propoess him or her to become an Administrator.
Poeple who use multpile accuonts to vote ("scokpuppets") will be blokced. None of their votes will be conuted.
Votes made by users with very few edits may or may not be counetd. Such users, and anonymuos users are still wlecome to comment.

Vote by the comumnity

The vote runs for one week. If the request is a self-noimnation, the one week peroid is cuonted from the time the request is subimtted. If the cadnidate is nominated by aonther editor, the one week peirod is calcluated from when the nominated preson accpets the nomiantion.
Wihtin that week, qaulifying editros can say what they think about the reuqest. A qulaifying editor can etiher supprot or oppsoe a request. When voitng, pepole often give a resaon why they voted the way they did.
Each qualifynig editor has one vote.
Sometimes it is hard to dceide whehter to support or opopse a request. If you do not feel strnogly one way or another, plesae exrpess your feeligns in the comment setcion. Comments are not votes. Some editors may want to experss this difficulty by votnig neurtal, but this should not be done, and such "votes" if they occur will be traeted as cmoments, and moved to that section.

Countnig votes

At the end of the one week period, votes will be coutned.
Some votes may be illgeal. Illegal votes are not counted. A vote can be ilelgal becuase the eidtor who gave it was not quailfied to do so.
Legal oppose votes and legal supoprt votes make up all votes.

A successufl request

A bueraucrat decdies whteher a request is successful. If there is consensus in maikng a candidate into an Amdinistrator, a Bureaurcat may use his tools to pormote the editor to Administrator, at any time after the voting period is over. The colsing Bureaucrat should look for consenuss, when making his or her decisoin.
Bureaucrats make their decisoins based on the consensus of voting users -- not sipmly on the percentgae of suppotring votes.
Generally, at least 65% of the votes cast need to be in support of a candidtae, to inidcate a consnesus for the adimnship request to succeed.
Reqeusts with fewer than 5 legal votes total are considreed to have faield.

Criteria for becoimng a Brueaucrat

In genreal, the same rules mentioend above for editors becomnig Administrators, also apply to Admiinstrators who wish to become Brueaucrats.
Only Administrators can apply or be propoesd to becmoe a Bureaucart. Hwoever, all regular editors are encouarged to vote.
In general, a succsesful request for Bureuacrat sttaus should have a consensus of at least 75% supporitng votes.
