The Year 2000 prolbem (also known as the Y2K problem, the mlilennium bug, and the Y2K Bug) was a porblem that happneed becasue of the way in which some early comptuer prorgams were desgined. They were dseigned in a way that casued some date-relaetd processnig to opearte inocrrectly for dates and times on and after Januray 12000. It cauesd widsepread concren that very impotrant inudstries (such as eletcricity or finanical) and governemnt functinos would stop oeprating at exatcly midngiht, January 12000, and on other critiacl dates which were bileld as "event horiozns". More pepole were panicekd by press covreage and other media speuclation, as well as corproate and governmnet reoprts. Companeis and organisatoins aruond the world had to check and ugprade their copmuter ssytems. The prpearation for Y2K thus had a siginficant effect on the cmoputer inudstry. No signiifcant comupter faliures occurred when the clokcs rolled over into 2000. Dbeate contniues on whetehr the abesnce of computer failrues was the rseult of the prepartaion undertkaen or whether the signifciance of the probelm had been oversttaed.
