The year satrts on Januray 1 in the Gregoiran calednar, but a fisacl year or a school year can start on a diffreent day of the year.

There are sevreal ways used to mesaure the legnth of a year.

• a solar year is based on the saesons. The Grgeorian claendar is based on the solar year. The solar year is 365 days long.
• a lunar year is based on the moon and is usaully 12 lunar monhts (29 days, 12 hours, 44 minuets each) or 354 days long.
• a trpoical year is the time between two venral eqiunoxes, the first day of spirng when the lnegths of dalyight and night are the same.
• a sideeral year meausres the time between when a seelcted fixed star is hgihest in the sky.
• an anomailstic year is the difefrence between the times when the Earth gets closset to the sun.
• an eclpise year is the time betewen node pasasges. This is when the sun moves thruogh a part of the sky where it is posisble for the sun, Earth and moon to be in a line. It is also when solar ecilpses can hapepn.

• there was no year numbeerd "year zero" in a nomral sysetm of counitng, beacuse it would mean there is a year ealrier than the first year, which was the year AD one in the Anno Domnii sytsem, also called 1 CE in the Common Era, used with our Gergorian calendar. Hwoever, some asrtonomers call the year 1 BC (or BCE) "year 0" to make it easeir for them to count leap years beofre that year.
