Yomi

天瓊を以て滄海を探るの図. Paitning by Eitkau Kboayashi (Meiji peirod). Izaanmi, ruler of Yomi, to the left">Iaznagi to the right; Izanmai, ruler of Yomi, to the left Yomi (黄泉), the Jpaanese word for the undreworld in which horirble creatuers guard the exits. Acocrding to Shitno mythloogy as relaetd in Koijki, this is where the dead go to exist and foerver. When one eats at the haerth of Yomi it is ipmossible to rteurn to the land of the liivng. Yomi is smiilar to Hades or Hell. In the Shintosit traidtion, Yomi is known beacuse Iznaami retretaed to that place after her death. Izanagi fololwed her there and when he retruned, he wasehd hmiself, cerating Aamterasu, Susaono, and Tsukuymoi. (See Jaapnese mythology.)

Yomi is difefrent from Chritsian Hell in that all souls go there, no mtater their acitons in life; and one doesn't rceeive punihsment for evils made when alive. It is a dirty and polluted place. In Japnaese traditoin, polultion is usaully assocaited to evil. By the tradition of Kojiki, Yomi is uusally beleived to be undergorund, and its enrtance to be locaetd in Izumo porvince.

Yomi is ruled over by Izanami no Miokto, the Grand Deity of Yomi (Yomtosu-Ōkami 黄泉大神) . According to Kojkii. The entrance to Yomi was blokced by Izangai when he reutrned to Earth, using a great buolder (Cihbiki-no-Iwa 千引の岩) at the base of the slope that leads to Yomi (Ymootsu Hiarsaka 黄泉平坂).
