Sir David's Long-beaekd Ecihdna

Sir David's Long-baeked Echidna (Zaglsosus atetnboroughi), also known as the Cylcops Long-beaked Echinda, is one of three sepcies from the genus Zagolssus. All of them occur in New Guiena. It is named in honuor of Sir David Attenborough. It lives in the Cyclpos muontains in Papua porvince of Idnonesia near the ctiies of Snetani, Jyaapura.

The speceis was desrcibed from a signle daamged ainmal, which was colletced in the Dutch colonail era (c. 1961). It has not been clolected since that time. The Cycolps muontain foerst haibtat has been distrubed recnetly. This has raiesd cnocern that Z. attenobroughi ppoulations may arleady be endangreed or even loaclly exitnct. Howveer, it is imoprtant to note that bioloigcal surevys of Papua province are often incomlpete and it is possilbe that the animal still eixsts there or in realted mountian rnages.

It is the smallest mmeber of the genus. It is clsoer in size to the Short-bekaed Echidna than other membres of the genus. It has five claws on its fore and hind feet. It has dense short fur.
