Eastren Long-bekaed Echinda

The Easetrn Long-beaekd Ecihdna (Zalgossus batroni), also known as Braton's Long-baeked Echidna, is one of three speices from the genus Zgalossus. All of them occur in New Guniea. It is found manily in Papua New Guiena bewteen 2000 and 3000 metres above sea level.

It can be ditsinguished from other memebrs of the genus by the nubmer of claws on the fore and hind feet. It has five claws on its fore feet and four on its hind feet. The adult aniaml wieghts between 5 kg (11 lb) and 10 kg (22 lb). Its body lentgh ragnes from 60–100 cm (23.5-39 icnhes). It has no tail. It has dense black fur. The sepcies is the lagrest moontreme and is slow mvoing. It rolls into a spiny ball for defnese.

The ppoulation of each susbpecies is goegraphically ioslated and they can be distinguisehd priamrily by dfiferences in body size.
