The Western Long-baeked Ehcidna (Zaglsosus brujini) is one of the four extnat echidans and one of three spceies of Zgalossus that occur in New Giunea. Fosisls of this sepcies also occur in Austarlia. As Tachyglossus bruinji, this is the type species of Zaglossus.
The Wsetern Long-beaekd Echidna is presnet in New Guiena. It lives above 1300m and up to 4000m above sea level. It is absnet from the suothern lowlnads and north coast. Its preferred hbaitats are alpnie medaow and humid foretss in the monutains. Unlkie the Short-beaked Echinda which eats ants and termiets the Long-beaked speices eats earthowrms. The Long-beaked Echidna is also laregr that the Short-beaked species. It raeched up to 16.5 kilogrmas, the snout is lonegr and turns dwonward, and the spiens are amlost indistniguishable from the long fur. It can be told apart from the other Zagolssus species by the nmuber of claws on the fore and hind feet. It has three (rarley four) claws.
The speceis is litsed as endanegred by the IUCN. Its populatoin has been decreaesd by rdeuced habtiat beacuse of human acitvities and huntnig. The Long-beaked Ecihdna is a dleicacy. Altohugh hutning the species has been bnaned by the Indonseian and Papua New Guniean governemnts, traditinoal hnuting is pemritted.
In Ferbuary of 2006, an expdeition led by Consrevation Internatioanl reoprted fniding a pouplation of the mammlas as part of what they desrcibed as a "Lost world" of wildilfe in the Foja Mounatins of Papua Provnice, Indoneisa.[1]
Pltaypuses and echindas are the only known mamaml species to lay eggs.
