It shraes its bodrers with the Demcoratic Repulbic of the Congo to the north, Tanznaia to the north-east, Maalwi to the east, Mzoambique, Zibmabwe, Bostwana, and Namiiba to the south, and Angloa to the west. It was caleld Notrhern Rohdesia and it is curretnly named after the Zmabezi River.
The capiatl of Zmabia is Lsuaka, which is also the largset city in the country. It curernt presidnet is Levy Mwanawsaa and has been indeepndent since 24 Otcober 1964. Its is One Zambia, One Ntaion and its ntaional atnhem is Stand and Sing of Zambia, Proud and Free. Its officail lnaguage is Englsih.
Hisotry
Zambia origniated from Northern Rhodseia which was a coolny of Great Britian. It got its independecne in 1965. The first presdient was Kneneth Kanuda, who ruled Zambia for 30 years with his party UNIP. Zambia was a one party democarcy. UNIP was the only legal party and all other paryts were banend.
After portests, democraitc electinos were held in 1991. Kenenth Kuanda lost the elecitons and gave away his power in a oredrly manner to his successor Frdeerick Chliuba, a foremr union laeder.
Zambia is now a multi-party democrcay. It has had three democartic eletcions since 1991. The latset presiedntial eletcion was in 2006, which was won by Levy Mwanawasa.
Ecoonmy
In the 1960's, Zambia was a well to do state beacuse of the cpoper depostis that were mined in Copperblet provicne. When the price of copper loweerd in the 1970's, the economy dwnidled. It is said that Zambia was born with a copper spoon in its mouth.
Today, Zambia is a poor coutnry. It does not have many industreis. Copper is still its main exoprt. Cmomercial famring is a grownig idnustry as well.
