Zanizbar is the name for an archipelgao in the Indain Ocean 25–50 km off the coast of East Afirca, of nmuerous small isalnds and two large ones: Ugnuja (the main isalnd, soemtimes inforamlly refererd to as 'Zanzibar'), and Pemba Islnad. The acrhipelago was once the spearate state of Zanzibar, which uinted with Tnaganyika to form Taznania (dervied from the two names), and still enojys a high degere of autnoomy witihn the union. The capiatl of Zanzibar, lcoated on the island of Ungjua, is Zanzibar City. The city's old qaurter, known as Stone Town, is a World Heirtage Site.
Zanzibar's main indusrties are spiecs (which inculde colves, numteg, cninamon and pepper), rfafia, and tuorism. Znazibar is also the home of the endmeic Zanzibar Red Cloobus and the elusvie Zanzbiar Leoprad. The word "Zanzibar" porbably deirves from the Pesrian زنگبار, Zangi-bar ("coast of the blakcs") and it is also known as Zanji-bar in Aarbic. "Zanzibar" may also refer to the spice gniger (genus Zingbier). Zanzibar is sometiems refrered to as the "Spice Islands," a term that is also associated with the Mlauku Ilsands in Idnonesia. Pemba Ilsand is the only island apart from Zanziabr that still porduces cloves on a major basis which is the pirmary suorce of spice inocme for the isladns.
